Tread Depth Checks

You need at least 2/32 of an inch of tire tread for safe driving, so regularly check your tread depth with a tread depth gauge or a penny. When using a penny, put the coin upside down into the tread. If you can see his head above the raised part of the tread, then you don’t have enough tread to drive safely.

Tire Pressure Checks

Check your tire pressure at least once a month with a tire pressure gauge when the tires are cool. You typically need to get your tires balanced every 5,000 to 6,000 miles, so getting the service done during tire rotation visits is a good way to take care of multiple problems at once.

Tire Replacements

You need to replace your tires if your tread is too shallow. You also need a new set if there’s any damage, such as cracking or bulging, on the sidewalls. If the tread is uneven and can’t be corrected by getting your tires realigned or rotated, then you will also need new tires. It’s a good idea to replace your tires every six years to try to avoid issues.
