Get in your Nissan Altima, Pathfinder, or Frontier and take the road out of Heath, OH, for unforgettable day trips to amazing destinations. Explore the winding passages in the Olentangy Indian Caverns, step back in time at Slate Run Living Historical Farm, and enjoy a day out in nature at the beautiful Punderson State Park.

1. Olentangy Indian Caverns

Inside the Olentangy Indian Caverns.

Take a drive out to Delaware to explore the maze of winding passages in the historic Olentangy Indian Caverns, carved millions of years ago by an underground river forcing its way through the soft limestone rock. The Wyandot tribe used the dark caverns to hide from their enemies and shelter themselves from the weather.

After exploring the caverns, go on a self-guided tour through the fascinating museum with help from audio recordings and interpretive panels. You will learn more about the history of the area and the Wyandot tribe’s arrows and stone implements found in the caverns.

Address and Hours

Olentangy Indian Caverns is at 1779 Home Road in Delaware and is open all week from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

2. Slate Run Living Historical Farm

Take a step back in time and experience real farm life the way it was way back in the 1880s at Slate Run Living Historical Farm. On this historic working farm, the farmworkers are all dressed in period clothing and, while doing their daily farm chores, will tell you all about the history of farming and agriculture in Ohio.

You can watch the farmhands harvest crops, collect maple syrup from the trees, and tend to the farm animals. Stroll through the farmhouse and peek in at the farm kitchen to see how traditional homemade meals were prepared with fresh farm produce over a century ago.

Address and Hours

Slate Run Living Historical Farm is at 1375 Ohio-674 Canal Winchester. Please check their website for opening hours.

3. Punderson State Park

A bit further afield but well worth a road trip is the breathtaking wooded 741-acre Punderson State Park. Enjoy the beauty of the glaciated plateau region of Ohio. The scenic 150-acre Punderson Lake, the largest and deepest and one of only a few natural kettle lakes left in the state, was formed when large ice blocks broke off the Wisconsinan glacier.

The lake is ideal for boating, paddling, and fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, trout, and catfish. The woodlands surrounding the lake attract an array of bird and animal life. Canada geese, great blue herons, wood ducks, and horned owls have made this beautiful park their home. You will catch glimpses of raccoons, beavers, opossums, and white-tailed deer if you hike down the trails.

Address and Hours

Punderson State Park is at 11755 Kinsman Road in Newbury Township and is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
